Automatic starchmeters help control the ripeness of fruit. These technologies provide monitoring of starch values which is much more accurate and quicker than visual readings.
Starchmeters operate via reaction with an iodine-potassium iodide solution. After this treatment, the equatorial section of the fruit is photographed, then the image is analyzed in order to compute the starch value, which is then displayed. This method can be applied on single pieces or averaged over a sample of up to 12 pieces.
